Amongst the major openings in London this week are:

OPENING TONIGHT, Monday 29 September 2008 (previews from 24 September), Adrian Dunbar and Kimberley Nixon star in David Joss Buckley’s adaptation of Tracy Chevalier’s novel Girl With a Pearl Earring at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Telling the story behind the creation of Vermeer’s iconic painting – often dubbed the ‘Mona Lisa of the North’ – it transfers to the West End following a short preview run at the Cambridge Arts theatre (See News, 22 Jul 2008). It runs until 1 November 2008.

OPENING TUESDAY, 30 September 2008, Alan Rickman directs Tom Burke, Anna Chancellor and Owen Teale in David Greig’s new version of Strindberg’s rarely seen 1890 comic tale of obsession Creditors at the Donmar Warehouse, where it runs until 15 November 2008.

ALSO ON TUESDAY, A Mother Speaks, Judd Batchelor’s one-woman play about gun crime, opens at Hackney Empire Studio directed by Susie McKenna, running for a short season until 5 October 2008.


OPENING WEDNESDAY, 1 October 2008 (previews from 30 September), Skins’ Aimeé-Ffion Edwards makes her West End debut in the world premiere of SH*T-M*X by Leo Richardson at Trafalgar Studios 2, a funny yet gritty portrait of contemporary teenage life (See News, 28 Aug 2008). Until 25 October 2008.

ALSO ON WEDNESDAY (previews from 30 September), former RSC artistic director Terry Hands’ brings his Theatre Clwyd production of Jonathan Lichtenstein’s Memory to the Pleasance theatre, where it runs until 2 November (See News, 7 Aug 2008).

OPENING THURSDAY, 2 October 2008 (previews from 25 September), Nancy Carroll, Will Keen and Richard Cordery head the cast in Samuel West’s new production of Harley Granville Barker’s Waste at the Almeida Theatre, where it runs until 15 November 2008.

ALSO ON THURSDAY, the Actors Company presents Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba and John Osborne’s A Patriot for Me in rep at the New Players’ theatre until 1 November 2008.

ALSO ON THURSDAY (previews from 30 September), Annie Casteldine and Ben Evans direct the world premiere of Gillian Plowman’s Yours Abundantly, From Zimbabwe at the Oval House, until 18 October 2008.


OPENING SUNDAY, 5 October 2008, Joanna Lumley and Stephen Fry host The Story of James Bond – A Tribute to Ian Fleming for one night only at the London Palladium in aid of the British Heart Foundation, with appearances from Samantha Bond, Judi Dench, Jeremy Irons, Lee Mead, Roger Moore, Rosamund Pike, Patrick Stewart, David Suchet and Harriet Walter. The event brings to a close the year-long series of events honouring the centenary of Fleming’s birth.
