West Side Story first night report

WOS TV: Our Top Theatre Video Picks - 20 Aug 2008

Date: 20 August 2008

The new-look Whatsonstage.com Television channel is a rapidly expanding archive of theatre-related video content. As well as exclusive first night reports, we regularly add show trailers, event promos, interviews, video diaries, behind-the-scenes footage and some hysterical “best of the web” gems, all handpicked by us.

Here’s a selection of some of our favourite recent additions:

  • West Side Story’s London premiere - The 50th anniversary production of West Side Story opened earlier this month and Whatsonstage.com was there to meet the stars and hear the thoughts of the celebrity guests – including soon-to-be Nancy Jodie Prenger and Rocky Horror Show scribe Richard O'Brien. >>>Click here to view!

  • Interview extracts - Carl Hiaasen’s Lucky You - One of the major plays at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe is a new adaptation of American satirical novelist Carl Hiaasen’s Lucky You, about the ramifications of a lottery win in a red-neck Floridian community. This video feature interviews with the author, producer Jon Plowman and director Francis Matthews. >>>Click here to view!

  • Female of the Species "endorsed" by Greer - In a rather cheeky promo video, the producers of Female of the Species, the new play inspired by events in the life of leading feminist Germaine Greer, have reeked revenge on the Aussie author for recent criticisms she made of the play (See News, 14 Jul 2008). One imagines she's not quite as amused by it as we were...>>>Click here to view!

  • Show Trailer - On the Waterfront - Currently showing at the Edinburgh Fringe as part of a national tour, Steven Berkoff’s adaptation of 1954 Oscar-winning film On the Waterfront has been one of the hits of the festival. This promo film features show clips (including the show’s most famous line - “I coulda been a contender”) as well as an extensive interview with the director. >>>Click here to view!

  • Joan Rivers Swears on Daytime TV - Just in case you didn’t happen to see it at the time, the ever-contentious comedienne Joan Rivers made a slight slip-up whilst appearing on ITV’s Loose Women programme a few weeks back. It provides something of a foretaste of what attendees at this year’s Whatsonstage.com Theatregoer’s Choice Awards nomination party can expect – Rivers is hosting the event (bleeper-free!) at London’s Café de Paris on 5 December 2008 (See News, 26 Jun 2008) >>>Click here to view!

  • Edinburgh 2008 - Royal Mile Snapshots - Walking the Royal Mile flyer-gauntlet is an integral part of the Edinburgh Fringe experience. Here's a brief snapshot of the various shows and street performers plying their trade at this year's festival. For extensive, up-to-the-minute coverage of Edinburgh 2008, including news, reviews, blogs and features, visit Whatsonstage.com/Scotland >>>Click here to view!
