Macbeth & Hairspray Triumph at Standard AwardsDate: 27 November 2007
Chichester Festival’s “Macbeth of a lifetime” triumphed at today’s Evening Standard Theatre Awards, winning two coveted prizes (See News, 7 Nov 2007). In a star-studded lunchtime ceremony, hosted by Richard Wilson at the Savoy Theatre, Patrick Stewart (pictured) was crowned Best Actor and Rupert Goold Best Director. Stewart’s win today is his second acting trophy for his title performance, following last month’s TMA Awards. Macbeth finishes its limited West End season at the Gielgud Theatre on 1 December 2007, before transferring to New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Another TMA winner was also victorious today. Polly Stenham - whose debut play That Face premiered this year at the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Upstairs and won the TMA Award for Best New Play – took home the Standard’s Most Promising Playwright prize, which carries with it a cheque for £25,000.
Anne-Marie Duff meanwhile triumphed over Penelope Wilton, Billie Piper and Portia to scoop Best Actress for her title performance in Marianne Elliott’s National Theatre production of Saint Joan. The NT won a second prize, Best Design, for Rae Smith and the Handspring Puppet Company for its work on Michael Morpurgo’s adaptation of children’s book War Horse, co-directed by Elliott.
Blockbuster Broadway import Hairspray, which stars Michael Ball and newcomer Leanne Jones, came tops in the Best Musical category, while Complicite’s A Disappearing Number was crowned Best Play and Stephen Wight was named Outstanding Newcomer for Don Juan in Soho at the Donmar Warehouse and the Menier Chocolate Factory revival of Dealer’s Choice, which transfers to the West End next month.
The first prize-giving of the awards season – ahead of the Critics’ Circle, the Laurence Olivier and Whatsonstage.com’s own Theatregoers’ Choice Awards, all of which are announced in the new year – the Evening Standard Awards are decided by a panel of critics from the Mail on Sunday (Georgina Brown), Observer (Susannah Clapp), Times (Benedict Nightingale) and Daily Telegraph (Charles Spencer) as well as the Standard itself (Nicholas de Jongh).
