Nominations Open in Theatregoers’ Choice AwardsDate: 5 November 2007
The nominations phase in this year’s Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards, the only major theatre prize-giving to be decided by the public, opens today, Monday 5 November 2007. The annual Awards, now in their eighth year, have firmly established their place in the theatrical calendar with over 12,000 people voting last year alone. Voting for both the nominations and eventual winners takes place online at awards.whatsonstage.com.
Throughout November, theatregoers can log on to nominate their favourite performances and productions for Awards consideration across all 24 categories. Amongst these are standards including Best Actor, Best Actress and Best New Musical as well as less conventional fields such as Best Ensemble Performance, Best Off-West End Production and Theatre Event of the Year.
The full Awards shortlists will be announced on Friday 7 December 2007 at a star-studded lunchtime ceremony, guest hosted by the first lady of British musical theatre, Elaine Paige OBE, at Café de Paris in the heart of the West End. As part of the nominations presentation, there will be a special concert featuring performances from some of this year’s new musical arrivals (See News, 26 Oct 2007).
After the launch party, the race is on to decide the eventual Theatregoers’ Choice Award winners, with voting continuing for two months from Monday 10 December and results announced in mid-February 2008. In a year dominated by big names – such as Daniel Radcliffe, Maggie Smith, Orlando Bloom, Diana Rigg, Patrick Stewart, Jessica Lange, Charles Dance and Kristin Scott Thomas amongst others - and big musicals – including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hairspray, Grease, The Lord of the Rings, Desperately Seeking Susan and Fiddler on the Roof – competition will be fierce in the main categories.
