Extensions: Goodman Fiddler, Pain & Itch at Court

Date: 4 July 2007

The Henry Goodman-led revival of Fiddler on the Roof at the Savoy Theatre has added a five-week extension to its current booking period. Initially intended as a limited season until 29 September 2007, the musical is now booking to 3 November 2007.

In Tsarist Russia in 1905, poor dairyman Tevye (Goodman) is doing his best to preserve tradition in the face of a changing world by marrying his daughters off in the traditional Jewish way. But revolution is in the air and the young are guided by their hearts, not their elders. When his daughters refuse the matchmaker's advice and marry for love instead, Tevye must choose between their happiness and his beloved traditions.

The cast also includes Julie Legrand, Victor McGuire and, as Tevye’s wife Golde, Beverley Klein, who recently took a short break from the production to appear in Into the Woods at the Royal Opera House. Also in the Fiddler on the Roof company are: Juliet Alderdice, Natasha Broomfield, Tomm Coles, Steve Fortune, Damian Humbley, Gareth Kennerley, Vincent Pirillo, Alex Ruocco, Alexandra Silber and Frances Thorburn.

This new production is directed by Lindsay Posner, designed by Peter McKintosh and features the original choreography of Jerome Robbins (recreated by Sammy Dallas Bates with additions by Kate Flatt).

Elsewhere, the Royal Court Theatre’s production of The Pain and the Itch, which scored highly with critics when it opened last week (See Review Roundup, 22 Jun 07) has added two weeks to its run, extending its original end date of 21 July through to 4 August 2007.

Billed as “a withering look at phoney liberal values”, the satirical comedy by Bruce Norris opens with a cosy family Thanksgiving dinner for six. Someone - or something - is leaving bite marks in the avocados. Clay and Kelly's daughter Kayla has an itch and Carol can't remember who played Gandhi.

The cast includes Spooks star Matthew Macfadyen, Ian Charleson Award winner Andrea Riseborough and Sara Stewart. The production is directed by Dominic Cooke in his first production since taking over as artistic director of the Royal Court earlier this year and since winning this year’s Best Director Olivier for his RSC revival of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible (See News, 6 Feb 2007).
