Menopause Musical Finishes London Run, 14 Jul

Date: 27 June 2007

Menopause The Musical, the American cult hit comedy about women undergoing “the change”, has posted early closing notices in London. The show received its UK premiere on 18 April 2007 (previews from 27 March) at the Shaw Theatre on Euston Road, where it was initially booking until 25 August. It will now close on 14 July after a run of three months (See Review Round-up, 20 Apr 2007).

In the show, written and produced by American Jeanie Linders, four women – referred to as Power Woman, Rutland Housewife, Soap Star and Earth Mother - meet at a lingerie sale with nothing in common but a black lace bra… and hot flushes, night sweats, memory loss, chocolate binges, not enough sex and day-to-day challenges with ageing parents, children and partners.

The 90-minute musical features re-lyricised parodies of 25 Baby Boomer hits, including “I Heard It thru the Grapevine, You No Longer See 39” and the Motown classic “My Thighs”. Since it first opened in Orlando, Florida, in 2001, the show has been seen by more than eight million people (mainly women) in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines.

The London production of Menopause The Musical stars a four-strong British cast - Su Pollard, Miquel Brown, Amanda Symonds and Samantha Hughes (See 1st Night Photos, 16 Apr 2007) - directed by Michael Larsen and choreographed by Patty Bender.
