Stones’ Satisfaction Ballet Rolls to Apollo, 29 Aug
Date: 4 June 2007

What Twyla Tharp did for Billy Joel with the award-winning Movin' Out (and less successfully with Bob Dylan in last year’s short-lived The Times They Are A-Changin’ on Broadway), Danish choreographer Peter Schaufuss is doing for the Rolling Stones: using the legendary rock group’s greatest hits as a backdrop for a new ballet. Recently seen in Denmark, Satisfaction will have its UK premiere at the West End’s Apollo Theatre in a limited season from 29 August (preview 28 August) to 8 September 2007.

Since the Rolling Stones formed in 1962, they’ve released nearly 30 albums and had nearly 40 top ten singles care of the writing partnership of lead singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards (pictured). Their hits include “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”, “Angie”, “As Tears Go By”, “Brown Sugar”, “19th Nervous Breakdown”, “Honky Tonk Woman”, “It’s Only Rock and Roll (But I Like It)”, “Let’s Spend the Night Together”, “Midnight Rambler”, “Mother’s Little Helper”, “Paint It Black”, “Ruby Tuesday”, “Sympathy for the Devil” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”. The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

Many of the band’s greatest hits are covered in Satisfaction which is billed as a “dance concert” and the “world’s number one dancical sensation”, offering “sex, dance and rock ‘n’ roll”.

A former director of the London Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet), Peter Schaufuss returned to Holstebro in his native Denmark to found the Peter Schaufuss Ballet, the country’s first independent, international touring ballet company. He made headlines in the UK two years ago with his dance piece based on the life of the Princess of Wales (See The Goss, 10 Mar 2005). Diana The Princess, which Schaufuss described as “not so much a ballet as a ‘musical without words’”, had its UK premiere at The Lowry in Manchester but the planned West End transfer never materialised. In addition to more conventional dance pieces, the Schaufuss repertoire also includes a ballet set to the music of Michael Jackson entitled I’m Bad.

Prior to Satisfaction at the Apollo, Antony Sher will play 19th-century Edmund Kean in Adrian Noble’s revival of Jean-Paul Sartre’s Kean which has a West End season from 30 May (previews from 24 May) to 18 August following a regional tour (See News, 16 Feb 2007).
