Opening: Eamonn Walker Is Globe’s First Othello
Date: 21 May 2007
In a slow week prior to next weekend’s Bank Holiday, there’s just one major London opening:
OPENING WEDNESDAY, 24 May 2007 (previews from 4 May), Eamonn Walker becomes the first black man to play the title role in Othello at Shakespeare’s Globe (pictured). The play, about the murderous jealousy of a black man in a white man’s world, continues in rep until 19 August 2007 as part of artistic director Dominic Dromgoole’s Renaissance + Revolution summer season. The cast also features Blackadder’s Tim McInnerny (as Iago), Zoe Tapper (Desdemona) and Lorraine Burroughs (Emilia). Directed by Wilson Milam, this production of Othello employs Renaissance staging, costume and music.
The Globe’s 2007 summer repertory season continues with new productions of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and Love's Labour's Lost, and premieres of Jack Shepherd’s Holding Fire! and Eric Schlosser’s We, the People.
