Opening: Sit & Shiver, Pinter's People & Model Girl

Amongst the major openings in London this week are:

OPENING TONIGHT, Monday 29 January 2007 (previews from 25 January), Steven Berkoff’s semi-autobiographical family drama, Sit and Shiver, opens at the Hackney Empire, following its premiere at Hampstead’s New End Theatre last spring, this time featuring the playwright and director in the cast as Lionel (See News, 12 Dec 2006). He joins Sue Kelvin as his wife, Debbie, who is mourning the loss of her father. The play, which runs to 18 February 2007, also stars Catherine Bailey, Leila Crerar, Barry Davis, Louise Jameson and Bernice Stegers.

OPENING WEDNESDAY, 31 January 2007, Ukrainian theatre company Dakh presents its production of Macbeth at the Barbican Pit Theatre for a run to 10 February 2007. Created in 2004, in the immediate aftermath of the Orange Revolution in the Ukraine, this production explores corruption and the seizing of power by foul means, accompanied by live music and masked performers.

OPENING THURSDAY, 1 February 2007 (previews from 30 January), all of the sketches and monologues by Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter are presented by comedians Bill Bailey, Kevin Eldon, Sally Phillips and Geraldine McNulty in Pinter's People at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, for a run to 25 February 2007 (See News, 9 Jan 2007). The sketches, which are directed by The Right Size’s Sean Foley, include a never before seen piece, as well as more familiar favourites Night (1969) and The New World Order (1991).

OPENING FRIDAY, 2 February 2007 (previews from 30 January), Emma Williams stars in A Model Girl, a new musical at Greenwich Theatre dramatising the events of the 1960s Profumo scandal in which former topless model and dancer Christine Keeler’s affair with the Secretary of State for War John Profumo rocked the political establishment (See News, 15 Nov 2006). The musical, which marks the stage return of Williams following her withdrawal from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of The Sound of Music, is written by Richard Alexander and Marek Rymaszewski and directed by Ruth Carney. It runs to 24 February 2007.
