Opening: Too Close, Out of Bounds, 2Graves at ArtsDate: 30 October 2006
Amongst the openings in London this week are:
OPENING WEDNESDAY, Too Close to Home, Rani Moorthy’s new drama about extremism in an ordinary Muslim family who gather together during Ramadan, comes to west London’s Lyric Hammersmith for a limited season in the Studio to 11 November 2006. A co-production between Rasa, Manchester’s Library Theatre and the Lyric, after London it continues on tour to Manchester, Leicester, Croydon and Warwick.
OPENING FRIDAY, 3 November 2006 (previews from 1 November), Paul Sellars’ Edinburgh Festival hit 2Graves receives its London premiere as the first production at the new Arts Theatre, which has reopened after a recent refurbishment and a change of management, which sees it re-styled as an “international home of the arts”, a 340-seat Off-West End theatre positioned in the geographical heart of West End (See News, 11 Oct 2006).
In Paul Sellars’ “fast, furious, funny and action-packed” modern verse drama, Bobby Topps is poised to take the crown at the 1978 World Professional Darts competition. Only now he’s dead. His son Jack sets out to avenge those he believes are responsible. Jonathan Moore stars, directed by Yvonne McDevitt. 2Graves limited five-week season continues until 7 December 2006, running concurrently with other lunchtime and late-night performances at the Arts.

ALSO ON FRIDAY (previews from 31 October 2006), south London’s Finborough Theatre launches its “Out of Bounds” season with two previously banned plays presented in repertoire. John Van Druten’s 1928 play Young Woodley revolves an 18-year-old prefect who falls in love with his schoolmaster’s wife, while Robert Anderson’s 1953 drama Tea and Sympaphy is set in an American boarding school where everyone believes young Tom is gay. The productions continue in rep until 25 November 2006.
