Fielding & West Join Cast as Rock ‘n’ Roll Extends

Emma Fielding and Dominic West (pictured) will next month join David Calder in Trevor Nunn’s world premiere production of Tom Stoppard’s Rock 'n' Roll, which has now announced a second extension at the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre, where it’s now booking for a further 15 weeks until 25 February 2007, while negotiations continue for a Broadway transfer.

Rock 'n' Roll spans the recent history of Czechoslovakia between the Prague Spring and the Velvet Revolution - but from the double perspective of Prague, where a rock 'n' roll band, and its fan, Jan, came to symbolise resistance to the regime, and the British left, represented by British Communist philosopher, Max, at Cambridge.

Rock 'n' Roll opened in the West End on 22 July following its world premiere at the Royal Court from 14 June 2006 (previews from 3 June) to 15 July as part of the Sloane Square theatre’s year-long 50th anniversary celebrations.

Brian Cox originated the role of Max and, on the play’s first extension from 26 September, was succeeded by Calder. From 14 November, West will take over from Rufus Sewell as Jan, and Fielding will take over from Sinead Cusack as Eleanor/older Esme.

Dominic West has just starred in The Voysey Inheritance at the National, while his other stage credits include As You Like It, opposite Helen McCrory and Sienna Miller in the West End, and De La Guarda. Fielding’s stage credits for the RSC, the National, the West End and elsewhere include Macbeth, Cymbeline, Look Back in Anger, Private Lives and Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia, also directed by Trevor Nunn.

A fellow newcomer to the Rock 'n' Roll cast next month will be Dolya Gavanski, succeeding Nicole Ansari as Lenka. Original cast members Martin Chamberlain (as Milan) and Peter Sullivan (Ferdinand) will remain with the production. Further extension casting has yet to be announced. Other members of the current cast are: Louise Bangay (Candida), Anthony Calf (Nigel), Miranda Colchester (Gillian), Alice Eve (younger Esme/Alice) and Edward Hogg (Stephen).

Rock 'n' Roll is designed by Robert Jones, with lighting by Howard Harrison, costumes by Emma Ryott and sound by Ian Dickinson. It’s presented in the West End by Sonia Friedman Productions.
