Voysey Returns, Extra Dates for Hay Fever & HicksDate: 14 June 2006
Peter Gill's acclaimed production of Harley Granville Barker's The Voysey Inheritance will return to the National Theatre’s repertoire later this summer, while two other plays - Hay Fever, starring Judi Dench, and Bill Hicks: Slight Return - have added two extra performances apiece to their limited London seasons.
The Voysey Inheritance will return to the NT Lyttelton, running in rep from 10 August to 30 September 2006. The production opened on 25 April 2006 (following previews from 18 April), and its initial season ended this past weekend, on 7 June. In August, Julian Glover and Dominic West will recreate their roles as father and son, alongside most of the other original cast, which included David Baron, Lucy Briers, Kirsty Bushell, Max Dowler, Christopher Gilling, Martin Hutson, Sarah Mowat, John Nettleton, John Normington, Sinead O'Keeffe, Anna Steel, Roger Swaine, Mark Tandy and Julia West.
Edward's highly principled world turns upside down when his father reveals that he has been illegally speculating with clients' money. To make matters worse, he soon discovers his large, scandal-fearing family would perpetuate the crime rather than risk public dishonour. And it's to Edward they look. Booking opens for the new run on 13 July 2006.
At the Theatre Royal Haymarket, Hay Fever has added two performances on Mondays 24 and 31 July 2006. Peter Hall’s revival of Noel Coward’s 1925 play opened on 20 April 2006 (following previews from 11 April) and does not usually play on Mondays. Judi Dench and Peter Bowles lead the cast, which also includes Belinda Lang, Dan Stevens and Kim Medcalf.
In Hay Fever, bohemian actress Judith Bliss (Dench) and her writer husband live in a rural haven with their precocious son and daughter. When various guests are invited down for the weekend, they become pawns in the family’s emotional, madcap games.
Finally, Chas Early’s solo performance as the late confrontational American comedian Bill Hicks will play two extra dates at Leicester Square’s The Venue. Bill Hicks: Slight Return opened on 1 June and was initially running to 17 June only. It will now return on 23 and 24 June 2006. The adult comedy contains political comment, satire and plenty of “dick jokes”.
