Opening: Two Millers, McKellen Cut & The Odyssey

Amongst the major shows opening in London this week are:

OPENING TUESDAY, 28 February 2006 (previews from 23 February), at the Donmar Warehouse, Ian McKellen and Deborah Findlay star in the world premiere of The Cut, the latest play by Mark Ravenhill (Shopping and Fucking, Mother Clap’s Molly House). In the drama, directed by Donmar artistic director Michael Grandage, an ordinary man who has a loving home life also has a shocking secret and longs to tell the truth (See News, 9 Dec 2005).

ALSO ON TUESDAY (previews from 23 February), Taboos (subtitled When Harriet Met Sally), a new comedy by scientist-turned-playwright Carl Djerassi premieres at Hampstead’s New End Theatre, for a limited season to 2 April 2006.

OPENING WEDNESDAY, 1 March 2006, Christopher Hampton's adaptation of Hungarian Sandor Marai’s best-selling novel, Embers, sees Jeremy Irons return to the London stage after a 17-year absence (See News, 7 Oct 2005). The three-hander is directed by Michael Blakemore and presented by debut theatre producers, Eric Abraham and Robert Haggiag at the West End’s Duke of York’s. Irons is joined by Patrick Malahide and Jean Boht.

ALSO ON WEDNESDAY (previews from 2 February 2006), at west London’s Lyric Hammersmith is artistic director David Farr’s re-telling of Homer’s The Odyssey, which brings the story into the 21st-century (See News, 2 Sep 2005). The limited season continues until 1 April 2006.

OPENING THURSDAY, 2 March 2006 (previews from 14 February), Arthur Miller's second-to-last play Resurrection Blues, which he was rewriting in the weeks before his death last year, receives its UK premiere at the Old Vic. Veteran film director Robert Altman directs an ensemble cast that features Hollywood film stars Neve Campbell and Matthew Modine alongside Austrian Maximilian Schell, Broadway’s Jane Adams and Britons James Fox and Peter McDonald (See News, 3 Jan 2006).

ALSO ON THURSDAY (previews from 28 February 2006), TV presenter and glamour model (and former girlfriend of John Leslie) Abi Titmuss makes her London stage debut in a revival of another Arthur Miller play, Two Way Mirror, in a Courtyard Theatre production at the Theatre Museum (See News, 19 Jan 2006). The semi-autobiographical play about Miller’s marriage to Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe has a limited run to 2 April 2006.

OPENING FRIDAY, 3 March 2006 (previews from 28 February), Sean Campion - who co-starred in the original production of Stones in His Pockets, in the West End and on Broadway - now appears in the UK premiere of another Irish play, Jim Nolan's Blackwater Angel, opening at the fringe Finborough Theatre in Earl’s Court (See News, 22 Feb 2006). It continues until 25 March 2006.
