Triplett Takes Over from Lancashire in Guys & Dolls

Date: 3 February 2006

Whatsonstage.com Award winner Sally Ann Triplett (pictured) will take over from Sarah Lancashire as Miss Adelaide in Michael Grandage’s hit production of Guys and Dolls. Triplett will lead a new cast into the musical at the West End’s Piccadilly Theatre from 6 March 2006 as Lancashire as well as the three other current principals - Nigel Harman, Nigel Lindsay and Jenna Russell - finish their contracts on 4 March 2006. No further replacement casting has yet been announced.

Prior to Triplett’s arrival, it seems increasingly unlikely that Lancashire, who has been off with a reported chest infestion, will return to the role of the permanently sniffly Miss Adelaide. Her last performance was on 4 January 2006, having been in the show for just one month (See The Goss 27 Jan 2006). In her absence, the role is being played by Lynsey Britton.

Triplett - who received a Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Anything Goes, has just finished a four-month stint as murderess and wannabe jazz singer Roxie Hart in the Kander and Ebb musical Chicago at the Adelphi (See News, 17 Aug 2005). Her other West End credits include Victoria Wood’s Acorn Antiques, Cats, Golden Boy, Rags, Jolson, Cabaret and Oliver!

The revival of Frank Loesser’s 1950 Broadway classic opened on 1 June 2005 (previews from 19 May) and is now booking up to 2 September 2006 at the Piccadilly. Based on Damon Runyon’s short stories about New York gamblers and their girls in the 1940s, the musical was made into a 1953 Hollywood film starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons and Frank Sinatra. Grandage’s revival, the first new production of Guys and Dolls in London for 23 years, is designed by Christopher Oram, with choreography by Rob Ashford, musical supervision by Jae Alexander, lighting by Howard Harrison and sound by Terry Jardine and Chris Full.

Guys and Dolls has won a total of four of this year’s Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards, including Best Actress and Actor in a Musical for the original Miss Adelaide and Sky Masterson – Jane Krakowski and Ewan McGregor– as well as Best Musical Revival and Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for Martyn Ellis’ Nicely Nicely Johnson (See News, 31 Jan 2006).
