Opening: Kneehigh’s Nights at the Circus & Lepage

Amongst the major shows opening in London this week are:

OPENING THURSDAY, 26 January 2006 (previews from 20 January), Emma Rice - artistic director of acclaimed Cornwall-based theatre company Kneehigh, whose production of Tristan and Yseult was at the National Theatre last year - now tackles the first stage version of Angela Carter's novel Nights at the Circus at west London’s Lyric Hammersmith. (See News, 2 Sep 2005). The book has been adapted by Rice and by Tom Morris.

In 1899, people dance to the irresistible rhythms of money, sex, love and freedom. Swinging above them all is a showbiz sensation - a fierce, vulgar, pant-droppingly sexy trapeze artist called Fevvers. The story charts Fevvers’ unlikely love affair with Walser, a world-weary journalist on a mission to expose her as a fake. Natalia Tena stars.

OPENING FRIDAY, 27 January 2006 (preview 26 January), Robert Lepage returns to the Barbican, where last year his epic work The Dragon's Trilogy was revived, with a far smaller show, The Andersen Project (See News, 9 Nov 2005). In this solo piece - written, directed and performed by Lepage – the artist continues his exploration of notable public figures, in this case the writer Hans Christian Andersen. The play had its world premiere in Quebec in February 2005. Its limited season continues at the Barbican until 18 February 2006.
