Rigg Returns with West End Honour at Wyndham’s

Date: 20 December 2005

Diana Rigg (pictured), who won the Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Award for Best Actress for her performance in last year’s revival of Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly Last Summer, will return to the West End in the new year. She’ll star in a new production of Joanna-Murray-Smith’s play Honour, which is due to start performances at Wyndham’s Theatre on 7 February 2006.

In Honour, Rigg plays Honor (sic), who for the past 32 years has been married to George. A prominent journalist, George is to feature in a book on the Movers and Shakers but when the beguiling young Claudia arrives to pen his profile, he's unsettled to have his own interview techniques - and a few other tricks - turned on him. When George leaves Honor for Claudia, their lives – including that of the couple’s insecure twentysomething daughter – are thrown into turmoil.

Australian playwright Joanna-Murray-Smith made her UK debut with Honour, when it received its UK premiere at the National Theatre in 2002. That highly acclaimed production, directed by Roger Michell, starred Corin Redgrave (as George), Catherine McCormack (Claudia), Anna Maxwell-Martin and Eileen Atkins, who won an Evening Standard Best Actress prize for her performance as Honor.

In the West End, Rigg will be joined by Martin Jarvis, Natascha McElhone (The Truman Show, Solaris) and Georgia Rich. Murray-Smith’s other plays include the one-woman Bombshells, which Caroline O’Connor performed to award-winning effect in the West End last year.

Currently at Wyndham’s, Gerald Sibleryas’ French three-hander Heroes - translated by Tom Stoppard and starring Richard Griffiths, John Hurt and Ken Stott – will finish its limited season on 14 January 2006 (See News, 14 Dec 2005).
