Opening: Rubenstein, Cyprus at Trafalgar & BlueDate: 18 November 2005
Amongst the major shows opening in London this week are:
OPENING TONIGHT, Monday 21 November 2005 (previews from 16 November), Thea Sharrock directs a new production of Eugene O’Neill’s rarely staged The Emperor Jones at west London’s Gate Theatre for a run to 17 December (See News, 21 Oct 2005). Paterson Joseph leads the cast in the controversial 1921 drama about greed, set against a backdrop of rebellion.
OPENING TUESDAY, 22 November 2005, Cyprus launches Trafalgar Studios 2, the smaller 100-seat studio at the West End’s former Whitehall Theatre (See News, 5 Oct 2005). The new British spy thriller by Peter Arnott, which was specially commissioned by the Mull Theatre on the Scottish Isle of Mull, where the story is set, runs to 17 December 2005.
OPENING WEDNESDAY, 23 November 2005 (previews from 17 November), north London’s Hampstead Theatre presents the world premiere of The Rubenstein Kiss (See News, 21 Oct 2005), which is written and directed by James Phillips and which features a cast that includes Samantha Bond, Will Keen and Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp. The play is inspired by the real-life story of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, the American husband and wife who were executed for espionage during the McCarthy era.

OPENING THURSDAY, 24 November 2005 (previews from 21 November), Almost Blue, an inventive, sound-led thriller that won this year’s Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Award, opens at west London’s Riverside Studios for a limited season to 10 December 2005.
ALSO ON THURSDAY, the Unicorn Theatre, the UK’s first purpose-built theatre for children, opens its doors on the South Bank, adjoining City Hall near Tower Bridge, with its production of David Wood’s adaptation of Tom's Midnight Garden (See News, 21 Sep 2005). It runs in repertory until 29 January 2006..
OPENING FRIDAY, 25 November 2005 (previews from 23 November), Cariad, the first full-length play by actress-turned-writer Sophie Stanton, opens tonight at the Tristan Bates Theatre at the Actors’ Centre in Covent Garden for a run to 17 December 2005.
