Cast: Joseph’s Jones, Tovey’s Tintin, Kiss, Sunday
Date: 21 October 2005

Further casting has been announced for three upcoming London plays – a revival of Eugene O’Neill’s The Emperor Jones at the Gate, the premiere of James Phillips’ The Rubinstein Kiss at Hampstead Theatre and the stage adaptation of Hergé’s Tintin at the Barbican - as well as Sondheim musical, Sunday in the Park with George at the Menier Chocolate Factory.

Paterson Joseph (pictured) will lead the cast of The Emperor Jones, a rarely staged, controversial 1921 drama about greed, set against a backdrop of rebellion. Joseph’s stage credits include Elmina's Kitchen, The Recruiting Officer and Whale at the National, Hamlet at the Almeida, Othello at the Royal Exchange and Raping the Gold at the Bush. He has also appeared in the film adaptation of Alex Garland’s novel The Beach. Directed by Gate artistic director Thea Sharrock, the production runs from 21 November to 17 December 2005 (previews from 16 November).

At Hampstead, Alan Cox (Earthly Paradise), Louisa Clein (The Lady from the Sea), Emily Bruni and Martin Hutson will join the previously announced stars Samantha Bond, Will Keen and Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp in Phillips’ play inspired by the real-life story of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, the American husband and wife executed for espionage during the McCarthy era (See News, 18 Jul 2005). The Rubinstein Kiss receives its world premiere on 23 November 2005 (previews from 17 November) and continues its limited season until 17 December 2005.

At the Barbican, Russell Tovey will take the title role in Tintin in the Young Vic’s premiere staging of the popular French comic book adventures by Hergé (See News, 20 May 2005). Tovey’s previous credits include extensive work at the National, most recently in The History Boys and His Dark Materials. The cast also features Sam Cox (The UN Inspector, Festen) as Captain Haddock and Simon Trinder (RSC Spanish Golden Age) as faithful companion Snowy as well as Tom Wu, Kenon Mann, Jason Rowe, Nick Tigg, Nicola Blackwell, Duncan Wiseby, Graham Kent, Mark Lockyer, Miltos Yerolemou, Simon Lim and Michael Camp. Tintin is adapted by David Greig and directed by Rufus Norris (Festen). It runs from 14 December 2005 to 22 January 2006 (previews from 14 December).

At the Menier Chocolate Factory, several new cast members, who have all appeared in top London musicals, will join Daniel Evans and Anna-Jane Casey in Sam Buntrock’s revival of Sondheim’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1984 musical about French impressionist painter Georges Seurat, Sunday in the Park with George (See News, 29 Jun 2005). They include: Simon Green, Ian McLarnon, Mark McKerracher, Alasdair Harvey, Liza Sadovy and Gay Soper. The production, the first major London revival since the musical’s UK premiere at the National in 1990, will have a limited season from 17 November 2005 to 18 February 2006.
