Mays Reprises Tony Winner Wife at York’s, 10 Nov
Date: 7 October 2005

As previously tipped (See The Goss, 3 Oct 2005), Doug Wright’s multi award-winning Broadway hit I Am My Own Wife will receive its UK premiere next month. It’s now confirmed to open on 10 November 2005 (previews from 4 November) for a 14-week season at the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre.

Jefferson Mays won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Actor for I Am My Own Wife, in which he plays a resilient German transvestite, who survives the Nazis and communism, as well as more than 30 other characters including one based on the author. In London, he will reprise his performance in the production directed by fellow American Moises Kaufman, whose recent UK credits include This Is How It Goes, Gross Indecency and The Laramie Project.

Wright’s play also became the first solo piece to win the Tony for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for drama. I Am My Own Wife was first seen in New York at Off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons in spring 2003. In December 2003, it transferred to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre where it ran for ten months. At the start of this year, the play launched a tour of the US. It opened this week in Ireland as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival.

Currently at the Duke of York’s, Ray Cooney’s 23rd West End comedy, Tom, Dick and Harry will now close on 29 October (See News, 4 Oct 2005). I Am My Own Wife is presented in the West End by Broadway’s David Richenthal, who is also behind the acclaimed transfer of Death of a Salesman starring Brian Dennehy, which finishes its limited season at the Lyric Theatre on 5 November 2005.
