Quick & Fox Can Tell with Shaw Transfer to Garrick
Date: 30 September 2005

As previously tipped (See The Goss, 23 Sep 2005), Sir Peter Hall’s revival of George Bernard Shaw’s You Never Can Tell will transfer to the West End’s Garrick Theatre where it will open on 7 November 2005 (previews from 25 October). It’s initially booking to 11 March 2006.

In Shaw’s 1899 comedy, the enlightened Mrs Lanfrey Clandon and her three unconventional children have returned to England after 18 years of living abroad. While staying at a seaside hotel in Torbay, the family bump into the staunchly traditional father they’d previously abandoned.

Diana Quick (last seen in the West End in After Mrs Rochester) and Edward Fox (last seen in the West End in The Old Masters) star as, respectively, Mrs Clandon and the all-knowing, all-seeing waiter. The cast also features Ken Bones, Rebecca Callard, Nancy Carroll, William Chubb and Ryan Kiggell.

After its initial run from 10 August to 3 September 2005 at Bath as part of Hall’s annual summer repertory season at the Theatre Royal there, You Never Can Tell embarked on a regional tour which concludes in Edinburgh on 22 October 2005 (See News, 15 Apr 2005). The production is designed by Kevin Rigdon, with lighting by Peter Mumford, costumes by Trish Rigdon and sound by Gregory Clarke.

Currently at the Garrick Theatre, Nigel Planer’s playwriting debut On the Ceiling, starring Ron Cook and Ralf Little, will now finish on 1 October 2005. It opened on 12 September (previews from 30 August) and had initially been booking until 31 December (See News, 19 Sep 2005).
