Kilmer’s Postman & Menier Boom Finish Week EarlyDate: 24 August 2005
Two London shows – the West End production of The Postman Always Rings Twice starring Hollywood’s Val Kilmer and the UK premiere of Jonathan Larson musical Tick Tick Boom at the Menier Chocolate Factory - have pulled forward their closing dates by a week.
Following its world premiere in Leeds last October, Andrew Rattenbury’s stage version of American John M Cain’s erotic thriller opened at the West End’s Playhouse Theatre on 7 June 2005 (previews from 24 May). After two extensions – as well as the cancellation of matinees performances and a bout of illness for star Val Kilmer – it was due to finish on 10 September. It will now close on 3 September 2005.
In Lucy Bailey’s production, designed by Bunny Christie, Kilmer stars as dangerous drifter Frank and Charlotte Emmerson reprises her performance as Cora, the bored wife of a 1930s roadside diner owner, whose drab existence is shaken up by Frank’s arrival.
The next production scheduled at the Playhouse is Pirandello’s As You Desire Me, which opens on 27 October 2005 (previews from 21 October). Directed by former Almeida joint artistic director Jonathan Kent, it stars Whatsonstage.com Award winner Kristin Scott Thomas and Bob Hoskins (See News 26 Jul 2005).
At the Menier Chocolate Factory, Tick Tick Boom has posted early closing notices because its current star, Christian Campbell, has to return to America for filming commitments.
The UK premiere of the semi-autobiographical musical by Pulitzer Prize-winning Rent creator Jonathan Larson received its European premiere at the Menier on 10 June 2005 (See News, 14 Apr 2005). Its original star Neil Patrick Harris (TV’s Doogie Howser MD) had to leave in July to return to the US for his own filming commitments (See News, 29 Jun 2005). Campbell, who previously appeared in the musical in New York, took over from 11 July. The show will now close on 28 August.
The next production at the Menier is What We Did to Weinstein, a new play by Briton Ryan Craig concerning the personal consequences of the Arab-Israeli conflict. It runs from 21 September to 12 November 2005 (See News, 29 Jun 2005).
