Opening: Terrorists, Shell, Scoop, Carver & Girls 2
Date: 4 July 2005

Among the major shows opening in London this week are:

OPENING TONIGHT, Monday 4 July 2005 (previews from 30 June), Out of Joint’s Talking to Terrorists (pictured) comes to the Royal Court’s Jerwood Theatre Downstairs as part of its UK premiere tour (See News, 23 Mar 2005). The new verbatim drama, written by Robin Soans and based on interviews with people who have been involved with terrorism, explores the reasons why ordinary people turn to such extreme measures. OJO artistic director Max Stafford-Clark directs. Its limited London season continues until 30 July 2005.

ALSO TONIGHT, John Barrowman - who won the Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Award for Best Actor in a Musical for Anything Goes and will soon be starring opposite Rob Lowe in the play, A Few Good Men, at the Theatre Royal Haymarket - launches his new London cabaret at Pizza on the Park in Knightsbridge. The show, which features musical hits, runs until Saturday (9 July 2005).

OPENING TUESDAY, 5 July 2005 (previews from 1 July) – and not to be confused with the similarly titled Neil LaBute play, Some Girls, starring David Schwimmer in the West End - the songs of The Smiths’ Morrissey and Marr are brought to the stage at west London’s Lyric Hammersmith in Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others (See News 15 Mar 2005).

The physical theatre show is conceived by Anonymous Society’s Andrew Wale and Perrin Manzer Allen, who previously had an award-winning hit at the Edinburgh Festival and Lyric Hammersmith with a show based on the music of Jacques Brel. The new piece is performed by four female singers and two male actors, accompanied by a string quartet and additional synthesised music loops.

The season, which runs until 12 July, includes plays by Mark Ravenhill, Nick Dear and Mamma Mia! creator Catherine Johnson.

OPENING FRIDAY, 8 July 2005 (previews from 6 July), veteran stage director William Gaskill (former artistic director of the Royal Court and a founder director of the National) returns to the theatre for the first time in ten years to direct Carver, an adaptation of five short stories by Raymond Carver including What’s In Alaska?, Fat, Cathedral, Intimacy and Put Yourself in My Shoes. The season runs until 6 August 2005.

OPENING SUNDAY, 10 July 2005, Hackney Empire launches Spice, a summer festival featuring 41 shows including cabaret, music, drama and comedy, running until 24 July.
