Opening: Fully Forty Winks, Heroes & The BacchaeDate: 1 November 2004
Amongst the major shows opening in London this week are:
OPENING MONDAY, 1 November 2004 (previews from 25 October), Fully Committed transfers from the Southwark-based fringe venue, the Menier Chocolate Factory to the West End’s Arts Theatre (See News, 30 Sep 2004). Becky Mode’s award winner is a one-man play that lampoons the upper echelons of New Yorker society. It was first seen in New York in 1999, where Mark Setlock first created the part of struggling actor-cum-reservation maker Sam as well as more than 40 other telephonic characters, most of whom will go to extraordinary lengths to bag a top table at Manhattan’s hottest restaurant. At the Arts, it runs concurrently with another Big Apple-set one-man show, Toby Young’s How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, starring Young himself.

OPENING WEDNESDAY, 3 November 2004 (previews from 28 October), Forty Winks, the latest play by Kevin Elyot (Mouth to Mouth, My Night with Reg) receives its world premiere at the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Downstairs, where it continues to 4 December (See News, 13 Jul 2004). A man visits a family he knew in his childhood and feels compelled to re-examine his memories about them and how he affected their lives. Casting has not yet been announced. Anastasia Hille and Dominic Rowan feature in the production directed by Katie Mitchell.

ALSO ON WEDNESDAY (preview 2 November), the Bridewell Theatre presents, We Could Be Heroes, one of its last-ever productions before its closure in January (See News, 7 Oct 2004). Written and starring Richard Lumsden (from TV’s All About Me, Is It Legal, Wonderful You), the play with music follows the fortunes of a struggling musician as he tries to follow in the footsteps of his heroes, including David Bowie. Its limited season finishes on 20 November.

OPENING THURSDAY, 4 November 2004 (previews from 2 November), after success with Red Shoes and The Wooden Frock, Kneehigh Theatre returns to west London’s Lyric Hammersmith with its retelling of Euripides Greek classic The Bacchae, directed by Emma Rice. It continues at the Lyric until 20 November as part of a national tour.
