Opening: Sensations & Little Women Around Cops

Amongst the major shows opening in London this week are:

OPENING TUESDAY, 12 October 2004, Singular Sensations (See News, 27 Jul 2004), the six-week season of music and cabaret at the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket concludes with classical pianist Joshua Rifkin and soprano Ida Faiella, who perform this week until 16 October.

OPENING WEDNESDAY, 13 October 2004 (previews from 27 September), at the West End’s Duchess Theatre is Emma Reeves' stage adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's 1868 novel Little Women (See News, 18 Aug 2004). Set in New England, Alcott's story follows the adventures of the March family - romantic Meg, fiery Jo, shy Beth and wilful Amy - four ambitious sisters growing up and falling in love during the American Civil War.

The Novel Theatre production is directed by Andrew Loudon and features Sarah Grochala, Sarah Edwardson, Diana Eskell and Phoebe Thomas as sisters Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth. First seen at the Edinburgh Festival in 1999, Little Women transferred in April 2001 to the fringe Upstairs at the Gatehouse in Highgate, north London, and was revived for sell-out Christmas seasons, in 2001 at Hampstead's New End Theatre and in 2002 at the Lilian Baylis Theatre, Sadler's Wells. It’s booking at the Duchess up to 15 January 2005.

OPENING FRIDAY, 15 October 2004 (previews from 12 September) at Soho Theatre is another play with an Edinburgh pedigree, this year’s Fringe First winner How to Act Around Cops (See News, 9 Sep 2004). The American black comedy, written by Logan Brown with Matthew Benjamin (who also stars), takes place on a single night when a speeding fine spirals into suspected murder and mayhem. The play is produced in the UK by Chantal Arts + Theatre.

How to Act Around Cops’ limited season continues until 6 November 2004 at Soho where, from next week, it will run concurrently with Vote Dizzy! An Evening with His Royal Hipness Lord Buckley, written and performed by Jake Broder and presented by Soho in association with Virginia Buckley. Vote Dizzy!, inspired by jazzman Dizzy Gillespie’s 1964 presidential campaign, revives the routines of cult US comic Lord Buckley in a late night rally of comedy and live music.
