Fitzgerald & Owen Revive Frayn’s Clouds on Tour

Tara Fitzgerald and Lloyd Owen will star in the first major revival of Michael Frayn’s 1976 comedy Clouds. The production opens on 25 October 2004 (previews from 21 October) at Cambridge Arts Theatre before touring, until 4 December, to four further venues.

When Owen Shorter (Owen), world-weary reporter, and Mara Hill (Fitzgerald), serious lady novelist, first meet in Cuba, they’re horrified to discover that they’ve both been commissioned to write the same article by competing newspapers. Journeying across the island - in the company of an older journalist, a beautiful local chauffeur and a sensitive tour guide - they find themselves beginning to move to the seductive local rhythms.

Fitzgerald is best known for her screen roles in Brassed Off, I Capture the Castle, Sirens, Hear My Song and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Her stage credits include Antigone, Our Song, Hamlet (opposite Ralph Fiennes) and, earlier this year, a tour of A Doll's House.

Owen, well known for TV's Monarch of the Glen, has performed regularly on stage with credits including Closer, Our Boys, Henry VI Part III, Julius Caesar, The Way of the World, Iphigenia and The York Realist, which transferred to the West End. He has also appeared on screen in The Story of Frankenstein, The Cinder Path, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Hearts and Bones, The Vice, Coupling and Dead Gorgeous.

Fitzgerald and Owen are joined in the cast by Rolf Saxon (The Graduate, Chicago, The Seven Year Itch), Darrell D'Silva (Absolutely! (perhaps)) and Ewen Cummings. Frayn’s many other award-winning plays include Copenhagen, Noises Off and, currently at the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre, Democracy.

The production is directed by Jennie Darnell, formerly associate director of Hampstead Theatre, where Clouds first premiered in 1976. It’s designed by Matthew Wright] and produced by Matthew Byam Shaw and Act Productions in association with Cambridge Arts Theatre.
