Edinburgh Influx Continues with Sisters & Cops

Date: 9 September 2004

Two more Edinburgh award winners will be receiving their London premieres in the coming weeks.

Sisters, Such Devoted Sisters will have a limited season at the Drill Hall, running from 29 September to 15 October 2004, prior to a New York transfer. In the monologue, written and performed by Russell Barr (pictured) and presented in association with Out of Joint, Drag Queen Bernice Hindley lifts the lid on Glasgow’s gay underworld.

At last month’s Edinburgh Fringe, where it ran at the Traverse Theatre, the play jointly won the inaugural Carol Tambor Award, which enables winning productions, chosen by the New York-based artist, to be mounted for an Off-Broadway run (See News, 31 Aug 2004). Tambor was so impressed by Sisters, Such Devoted Sisters that she decided to overlook the fact that it did not officially qualify having not first won a Scotsman Fringe First, as its co-winner, Mark Jenkins’ Rosebud had.

Next month, Fringe First winner How to Act Around Cops will open at London’s Soho Theatre for a limited season from 12 October to 9 November 2004 (See The Goss, 24 Aug 2004). The American black comedy, written by Logan Brown with Matthew Benjamin (who also stars), takes place on a single night when a speeding fine spirals into suspected murder and mayhem. The play is produced in the UK by Chantal Arts + Theatre, which is also behind the European premiere of Thom Pain.

At Soho, How to Act Around Cops will run concurrently - from 14 October to 6 November, timed to coincide with the final three weeks of the US presidential race - with Vote Dizzy! An Evening with His Royal Hipness Lord Buckley, written and performed by Jake Broder and presented by Soho in association with Virginia Buckley. Vote Dizzy!, inspired by jazzman Dizzy Gillespie’s 1964 presidential campaign, revives the routines of cult US comic Lord Buckley in a late night rally of comedy and live music.
