The Elephant Vanishes

Opening: Two Step Pushes & Complicite Vanishes

Date: 31 August 2004

Amongst the major shows opening in London this week are:

OPENING WEDNESDAY, 1 September 2004 (previews from 30 August), Push 04, a three-week celebration of Black-led performing arts (See News, 14 Jul 2004), officially kicks off tonight with the world premiere of Two Step, which continues at north London’s Almeida Theatre until 11 September.

Lenny is back after 32 years with new clothes, new teeth, new wife, new life. It’s all too much for Mona to stomach. The playwriting debut for actor Rhashan Stone stars Derek Griffith and Dona Croll and is directed by Push artistic director Josette Bushell-Mingo.

Two Step is followed in the Push schedule by the new opera Another America: Fire and the new ballet Awakening, running in a double bill at Sadler’s Wells from 16 to 18 September 2004. Push 04 is produced in collaboration with the Almeida, ROH2 at the Royal Opera House and English National Opera and is supported by Bloomberg and JPMorgan, Arts Council England, Decibel, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, Jerwood Foundation and NESTA.

OPENING FRIDAY, 3 September 2004 (preview 2 September), Complicite’s critically acclaimed play The Elephant Vanishes (pictured), based on the stories of Japanese author Haruki Murakami, returns to London’s Barbican Theatre for another strictly limited season to 25 September 2004 (See News, 7 Jul 2004).

Premiered in Japan in May 2003, the co-production between the Barbican and Tokyo's Setagaya Public Theatre was first presented in London last June as part of BITE:03 (Barbican International Theatre Event), when it earned Complicite artistic director Simon McBurney an Evening Standard Award nomination for Best Director.
