Edinburgh Pain & Peaceful Plays Transfer to Soho
Date: 19 August 2004

Two of the 2004 Edinburgh festival’s hit one-man plays have already booked their passages south. Both Thom Pain (based on nothing) and Private Peaceful will transfer to London’s Soho Theatre this autumn.

First performed at Soho as a Launch Pad reading, Thom Pain (based on nothing) is currently at the Pleasance Courtyard in Edinburgh until 30 August 2004. It will play from 3 to 24 September at Soho before transferring to New York.

Written by Will Eno, directed by Hal Brooks and performed by James Urbaniak, Thom Pain is billed as a “disturbingly funny new play that tackles modern life and love head-on”. It’s produced by Soho in association with Chantal Arts + Theatre and Naked Angels (NYC).

Based on Michael Morpugo’s 2003 children’s novel, Private Peaceful tells the heart-wrenching story of Tommo, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night, he relives his short but vivid past: his terrifying first day at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; late-night poaching with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that have brought him to the front line.

Adapted and directed by Bristol Old Vic joint artistic director Simon Reade and performed by Paul Chequer, Private Peaceful will run in Bristol from 8 to 23 September 2004, and then at Soho Theatre from 29 September to 10 October. It’s currently at Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms until 29 August.
