Robbins' Actors Gang Get Embedded at RiversideDate: 13 August 2004
American actor, Tim Robbins, is set to bring his new play to London. Although he will not star in the show he also directs Embedded, which opens at Riverside Studios on 9 September (previews from 31 August) and is scheduled to run until 23 October 2004.
Although best known for his appearances in film Robbins was one of the founding members of The Actors’ Gang, a Los Angeles based avant-garde theatre company, which was launched in 1981. He is now the artistic director and has directed six shows for the company. Robbins has also written and co-written many plays for The Actors' Gang besides Embedded, these include Methusalem, Violence, Carnage (which appeared at Edinburgh in 1998) and Mayhem: The Invasion.
A satire about embedded journalists in a Middle Eastern conflict and the shifting rationale by government leaders that leads to that conflict Embedded premiered at The Actors’ Gang in 2003, this was followed by a run at New York’s Public Theater.
An outspoken political activist, Robbins and his wife Susan Sarandon have made their anti-war feelings clear in the press. Robbins and Sarandon both performed in The Guys at the Edinburgh Festival in 2002 – a staged reading of Anne Nelson's 11 September-inspired, off-Broadway hit.
Robbins has appeared on the big screen in films such as The Shawshank Redemption, Jacob's Ladder, Short Cuts (Golden Globe), The Player and Bull Durham (where he met Sarandon). As a writer/director, he is responsible for Bob Roberts, Dead Man Walking and Cradle Will Rock.
