Open Air Swaps Henry for Additional Dream Dates

Date: 19 July 2004

The Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park has cancelled the final five performances of Henry IV Part 1 (See News, 6 Jan 2004). The Alan Strachan production (pictured) opened on 7 June 2004 (previews from 31 May) and had been scheduled to continue, in repertory, until 11 September. Instead it will now finish on 19 August.

The gap left by Shakepeare’s history play will be filled by extra performances of the bard’s most popular comedy, and a perennial park favourite, A Midsummer Night's Dream. Directed by artistic director Ian Talbot, it opened on 11 June 2004 (previews from 2 June) and will now have additional performances on 9, 10 and 11 September.

This summer’s Open Air season also features Talbot’s new revival of Lerner and Loewe’s classic Broadway musical Camelot, which opens this week, running from 23 July 2004 to 4 September (previews from 20 July), and the children’s show The Wind in the Willows, which runs in rep from 27 July to 21 August 2004.

Based on T H White’s novel The Once and Future King, Camelot retells the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, whose hopes for a peaceful society were destroyed by the love triangle between Arthur, his queen Guinevere and the Gallic knight Lancelot. Ian Talbot’s new production stars Daniel Flynn (as Arthur), Lauren Ward (Guinevere), Matt Rawle and Russ Abbot as lovable fool Pellinore.
