Travelex Holds Ballot for Royal Opera £10 Mondays

Date: 30 June 2004

Foreign exchange company Travelex today announced that tickets for the £10 Mondays at the Royal Opera House will be made available to the public from tomorrow (Thursday 1 July 2004) by means of a ballot (See The Goss, 8 Apr 2004).

Following the success of the inaugural Travelex £10 season at the National’s Olivier Theatre, which was voted the Planet Hollywood Theatre Event of the Year in the 2004 Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards, the £10 Mondays are being introduced as part of a £1 million sponsorship agreement with the Royal Opera House to provide 100 of the top seats – valued at up to £175 - every Monday for half the season for just £10.

Today’s announcement follows a consultation by the two organisations involved to develop a way of distributing the tickets. A ballot which is accessible online or by post was agreed as the best means of ensuring a fair allocation of the seats. Those interested can apply for either a single or a pair of tickets and need only to apply once to be entered into every ballot. There will be 23 ballots in total, one for each Travelex £10 Monday. All successful applicants will be informed at least two weeks before the date of the performance to allow them enough time to plan any travel or accommodation requirements.

The £10 Mondays begin on 20 September 2004 with a new production of Massenet’s Werther conducted by Antonio Pappano, Royal Opera music director. It also covers 2004/2005 performances of Faust, La forza del destino, La rondine, Un ballo in maschera, 1984, Il Turco in Italia, Rigoletto, Otello and Mitridate re di Ponto as well as Royal Ballet performances of Sylvia, Ondine, Swan Lake and other mixed programmes.

Applications can be made online at www.travelex.royaloperahouse.org or in writing to Covent Garden.
