Notes' Spicer & Atherton Premiere Little by Little

Paul Spicer (pictured) and Julie Atherton, stars of the ongoing Notes from New York concert series, will feature in the premiere of another American musical in the West End next month. Little by Little, a musical about “love, friendship, hormones and sex” first seen in New York in 1991, will have five performances only at the West End’s Arts Theatre, running on Sundays 25 July, 8 and 22 August 2004.

Produced by the same creative team behind the Notes from New York, the West End platform for contemporary US musical theatre, Little by Little examines the ever-blurred boundaries between friendship and love. One man, two women, three sets of hormones. He fancies her. She fancies him. So far, so simple. Except that he has another admirer in whom they both place their trust. Can friends ever be lovers? Lovers ever friends?

Spicer (whose other musical credits include The Witches of Eastwick, Fame, Taboo and Saturday Night Fever) and Atherton (Mamma Mia!, Fame and currently, Just So at Chichester) are joined in the Little by Little cast by Christine Holman, making her West End debut.

Little by Little has music by Brad Ross, lyrics by Ellen Greenfield and Hal Hackaday, and book by Annette Jolles and Ellen Greenfield. It began life in 1991 as a staged concert at the York Theatre Company in New York, after which it was rewritten and developed. A 1995 Greenwich Village workshop production led to its US regional premiere a year later in Miami and a subsequent full Off-Broadway staging in 1999.

The new London production is directed by Benjamin Till, with musical direction by David Randall and sound design by Marcus Wadland. It’s produced by Neil Eckersley.

Ahead of Little by Little, on 4 July 2004, Spicer and Atherton will be back at the Arts Theatre, where Notes from New York first started last year, with a special American Independence Day edition of the concert series (See News, 30 Apr 2004).
