Shape of Things Posts Closing Notices for 12 Jun

Date: 1 June 2004

Julian Webber’s new production of Neil LaBute’s The Shape of Things is the latest of the West End’s play casualties.

Following Calico, The Holy Terror, Coyote on a Fence (See News 26 Apr & 11 May, 2004) and, just announced last week, Rattle of a Simple Man (See News, 25 May 2004), all of which announced premature closures less than a month after opening, LaBute’s four-hander will close on 12 June 2004. It opened on 17 May 2004 (previews from 7 May), following initial dates in Plymouth and Brighton, and had been booking up to 3 July.

Set on a college campus in small-town America, The Shape of Things centres on four students engaged in an intense experiment in modern love and art, where nothing is quite what it seems.

The play premiered in June 2001 at London’s Almeida Theatre where it had an extended sell-out run. It later transferred to Broadway and, last year, was filmed with its original cast of Rachel Weisz, Paul Rudd, Fred Weller and Gretchen Mol.

The new West End production stars Hollywood’s Alicia Witt (Cybill, Two Weeks Notice, Mr Holland’s Opus) alongside British screen stars Enzo Cilenti, James Murray and Sienna Guillory. It’s designed by Simon Higlett and produced by Kenny Wax in association with PW Productions, Lee Menzies Ltd and McLaren Burnell.

No further productions have yet been announced for the New Ambassadors.
