Tompkinson, known from TV series such as Ballykissangel, Drop the Dead Donkey and Grafters, was previously seen in the West End in Art and Arsenic and Old Lace.
It is the latest high-profile production to have a truncated run of under a month, after the recent failures of Michael Hastings' Calico and Simon Gray's The Holy Terror.
