Hastings' Calico Premiere Closes After One Month

Date: 22 March 2004

Michael Hastings’ Calico, which received its world premiere less than three weeks ago, has posted early closing notices.

Opened at the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre on 3 March 2004 (previews from 20 February), the play – which concerns the troubled 1920s romance between Irish playwright Samuel Beckett and Lucia Joyce, the mentally unstable daughter of novelist James Joyce – had been booking up to 29 May. It will now close on 3 April, just one month after its opening night.

The production, directed by Edward Hall (Edmond, Propeller’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, stars Romola Garai as Lucia Joyce with Dermot Crowley and Imelda Staunton as her parents, James Joyce and Nora Barnacle. Also in the cast are Daniel Weyman (Samuel Beckett), Robert Portal, Jamie Beamish and Issy Van Randwyck.

Calico is designed by Francis O’Connor, with lighting by Ben Ormerod, sound by Matt McKenzie and music by Mick Sands. It’s produced by Sonia Friedman, Norman and Ted Tulchin and Matthew Mitchell Ltd.

Hastings’ play is due to be followed at the Duke of York’s by Laurence Boswell’s production of Simon Gray’s The Holy Terror, which stars Simon Callow and has just completed a short regional tour (See Today’s Other News).
