Musicals Extend: Tonight's the Night & Lion KingDate: 30 March 2004Two West End musicals – Disney’s long-running The Lion King and the more recently arrived Jerry Springer - The Opera - have announced extensions to their booking periods. Tonight's the Night, Ben Elton’s new musical fashioned around the greatest hits of British rocker Rod Stewart, opened at the Victoria Palace on 7 November 2003 (previews 15 October). It’s now extended its schedule by another four months and is taking bookings up to 2 October 2004. Tim Howar, Hannah Waddingham, Dianne Pilkington and Michael McKell lead the 36-strong cast of the Faustian tale, in which shy Stu makes a deal with the devil to be more like his idol Rod Stewart so that he can get girl of his dreams Mary. One of the UK's biggest rock stars in the late 1960s and 1970s, Rod Stewart's many hits over the years have included "Maggie May", "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy", "You Wear It Well", "Hot Legs", "The Killing of Georgie", "First Cut Is the Deepest", "You're in My Heart", "Sailing" and the show's title song, "Tonight's the Night".
Meanwhile, Disney's multi award-winning musical The Lion King has added another three-and-a-half months to its schedule. It's now taking public bookings up to 9 January 2005. The musical, based on the hit animated film, has songs by Elton John and Tim Rice and is housed at the Lyceum Theatre, its home since 1999. - by Terri Paddock Related Content |
