Camp Musical Dragula Opens at Heaven Nightclub

UPDATED 25 JULY 2003: Due to technical difficulties, this production has been slightly postponed. It will now begin previews on 2 August with a press night on 11 August.

The cult camp hit Dragula combines disco theatre with disco dancing next week when it opens at London's Heaven nightclub, under the arches near Charing Cross rail station. It will have a limited run from 28 July to 31 August 2003 (following previews from 21 July).

Set in a trendy gay nightclub called The Crypt, the 1980s retro musical centres on the club's manager who, mild-mannered by day, by night transforms into the deadly Dragula, the queen of the dance floor from the dark side. The villainous vampire seduces pretty young popstar wannabe Angelo, promising him fame in return for his virgin soul.

The story of Dragula against a backdrop of 1980s pop hits from the likes of Wham, Kylie, Bananarama, Donna Summer, Rick Astley and Yazoo. Written and directed by Keith Myers, the show is choreographed by Martin Wimpress and designed by Alan Bower with costumes by Saskia Green and lighting by David McCabe.

The Dragula includes Jonathan D Ellis, Stuart Cox, Carl Mullaney, Emma Bispham, Marianne Benedict, Paul Langley and Paul Callen. The show is presented by Simon Gross for The Production Crew Ltd.

An earlier version of Dragula ran last summer at Islington's fringe Rosemary Branch Theatre. According to the show's spokesperson, this all-new production has been recast and re-directed, with an updated script and score.
