Diana Quick in ETT's Ghosts
ETT's Quick & West Win Manchester Stage Awards
Date: 4 December 2002

Diana Quick (pictured) won a second award for her role as Mrs Alving in English Touring Theatre's production of Ibsen's Ghosts. At yesterday's ceremony for the Manchester Evening News Awards, billed as the Oliviers of the North, Quick won the prize for Best Actress in a Visiting Production.

Another ETT production - which, like Ghosts ran locally at The Lowry in Salford, just outside Manchester - was behind the award for Best Actor in a Visiting Production, which went to Timothy West in the company's current production of King Lear, while Theatre Clywd's To Kill a Mockinbird, also at The Lowry, won Best Visiting Production.

The Manchester Library Theatre won the three biggies - Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Productions - for Zoe Henry in Pygmalion, Ben Keaton in The Odd Couple and Shelagh Stephenson's The Memory of Water, respectively.

The Royal Exchange also scooped three awards, two for its revival of JB Priestley's Time and the Conways - Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Rachel Pickup and Most Promising Newcomer for Naomi Frederick - and one Best Fringe Performer honour for Oliver Dimsdale and his performance in The Dead Wait at the Royal Exchange Studio.

Manchester's Contact Theatre's The Irish Giant won Best Fringe Production and Oldham Coliseum took home two awards (Best Design and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Stephen Scott) for its production of Ten Rillington Place.

Beauty and the Beast won in two different guises. The visiting musical at the Palace Theatre won Best Musical while Beauty and the Beast on Ice at the MEN Arena won Best Special Entertainment.

The award for Best New Play went to 52 Degrees South at the Imperial War Museum North. Other awards went to Tamerlano at the Royal Northern College of Music (Best Opera), Dance Theatre of Harlem at The Lowry (Best Dance) and Ross Noble at the Dancehouse (Best Comedy).
