Home & Beauty Pulls Closing Date Forward to 11 Jan

The West End revival of W Somerset Maugham's 1923 comedy Home and Beauty has posted early closing notices. The production - starring Whatsonstage.com Award winner Victoria Hamilton opposite television's Jamie Theakston and Alexander Armstrong - opened at the West End's Lyric Theatre on 29 October 2002 (previews from 15 October) and had been booking to 1 March 2003. It will now close on 11 January 2003, after a three-month run.

Maugham's comedy revolves around the marital complications of a returning First World War hero. When her first husband (Armstrong) returns from the trenches, Victoria Lowndes (Hamilton) has a problem - presuming him dead, she's married his best friend (Theakston). Mayhem comes care of two husbands, rations, below-stairs mutiny and outspoken mothers.

Though now best remembered for his novels such as Of Human Bondage and The Moon and Sixpence, Maugham wrote many plays, including East of Suez, The Letter, Cakes and Ales, Sheppey, The Land of Promise, The Circle and The Constant Wife, which completed an extended West End season last month.

Home and Beauty is directed by Christopher Luscombe and designed by Simon Higglet. Also in the cast are Cate Debenham-Taylor, Jane How, Cameron Blakely, Charles Kay, Lisa Roberts and Matthew Duquenoy. The revival is presented by Bill Kenwright, who also produced The Constant Wife.
