Operatic Musicals Crowd & The Gondoliers Tour UK

Opera meets jazz in a new musical comedy starring opera diva Rosalind Plowright. Two's a Crowd opens tomorrow, 7 September 2002, at The Duke's Playhouse, Lancaster, before continuing until mid-November to Salford, Leeds, Southampton and Sheffield.

Two's a Crowd (pictured) develops the comic opportunities that occur when a world-class diva find herself double-booked with a popular jazz singer. Can the two styles be made to work together or will diva temperament triumph over the laid-back crooners? One-upmanship prevails as the crooner attempts Don Giovanni and the prima donna tries some bump and grind.

The show is based on a script by singer Robert Habermann, who co-stars as the crooner, with original music by Graeme Davies and direction by John Pohlhammer. One of Britain's leading opera singers, Plowright has appeared in most major opera houses around the world and performed alongside the likes of Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti.

Also this weekend, Carl Rosa Opera company launches a new golden jubilee production of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Gondoliers, directed by Jamie Hayes. It opens on 8 September 2002 at Malvern before continuing until 30 November to Norwich, Salford, Bradford, Glasgow, Blackpool and Cork in Ireland.
