Iron, Horse & Bomb-itty Nab Stage Fringe Awards
Date: 29 August 2002

The three winners of the Awards for Acting Excellence at this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe - presented by The Stage newspaper and published in today's edition - are all in negotiations to transfer their productions to London in the coming months.

The award for Best Actor went to David Calvitto for Horse Country for CJ Hopkins' comedy drama assault on American consumerist culture, which played at the Assembly Rooms. Last week, the two-hander also won The Scotsman's coveted Best of the Fringe Firsts award for the top pick of all of the festivals premiere productions. Producers are now in negotiations to take the play on tour and then to London in early 2003.

Sandy McDade scooped The Stage honour for Best Actress for her performance as an institutionalised prison inmate in Rona Munro's psychological drama Iron at the Traverse Theatre. The Royal Court - which has already bagged the Traverse production of David Greig's Outlying Islands, opening in London next week - is now looking to add Iron to its schedule for a possible five-week run.

And finally, the award for Best Ensemble went to Bomb-itty International for their off-Broadway rap version of Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, reconceived as The Bomb-itty of Errors, at the Pleasance in Edinburgh. It is now expected to transfer to the West End.
