Opera della Luna Return with G&S to Bridewell

Opera della Luna Return with G&S to Bridewell

Date: 28 August 2002

Following their one-week engagement in May, Opera della Luna return to London's Bridewell Theatre for a five-week season of three Gilbert & Sullivan send-ups running in repertory from tonight, 28 August 2002.Victorian melodrama The Ghosts of Ruddigore (pictured), based on G&S's original Ruddygore and starring double Whatsonstage.com Award winner Craig Purnell, kicks off the company's season, from 28 August to 8 September. In it, two members of a G&S society set off to find the lost village of Rederring, the setting of Gilbert & Sullivan's tale of spooks and wicked baronets. But when their car breaks down, they soon find themselves a part of the operatic action.

The Parson's Pirates, running 3 to 28 September, sees the vicar of St Michaels-under-Ware promising an evening of "naughty-cal" adventure as he attempts to stage The Pirates of Penzance in the village hall.

Finally, Opera della Luna's own HMS Pinafore, in which a snobbish sea captain attempts to marry his daughter off to the First Lord of the Admiralty despite her love for a common sailor, plays 13 to 28 September.

Founded in 1993, Opera della Luna is a small-scale opera company that has toured the UK and internationally and performed at the Covent Garden, Edinburgh, Canterbury, Exeter and Arundel festivals. All three of their current Bridewell offerings have recently toured nationwide.
