Anderson & Dench Head Rodgers' Enchanted Gala

Date: 10 May 2002

Judi Dench, Lesley Garrett and Bob Hoskins will be amongst the stars taking part this weekend in the official charity gala concert celebrating this year's centenary of legendary American musical composer Richard Rodgers.

Titled An Enchanted Evening, after one of Rodgers' famous ballads from the musical South Pacific, the gala will take place this Sunday 12 May 2002 at 7.00pm at the West End's Theatre Royal Drury Lane. X-Files star Gillian Anderson (pictured), due to appear onstage in London this autumn in Michael Weller's What the Night Is For will host the event, with all proceeds donated to the Neurofibromatosis Association, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of those affected with the progressively disfiguring condition.

An Enchanted Evening - directed by Simon Callow and conducted by the internationally acclaimed David Charles Abell - is a narrative and musical journey through the life and works of Richard Rodgers. It will feature a unique mix of Rodgers' more famous hits, including many of those from collaborations with Oscar Hammerstein II, as well as some rarely heard works including "Manhattan", "My Funny Valentine", "Johnny One-Note", "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" as well as works from hit musicals such as "The King and I", "Carousel" and "The Sound of Music".

In addition to those already mentioned, the catalogue of celebrities taking part will include: Graham Bickley, Kim Criswell, Ruthie Henshall, Jimmy Johnston, Lesley Joseph, Josie Lawrence, Denis Lawson, Maureen Lipman, Millicent Martin, Sheridan Morley, Clive Rowe, Joanna Riding, Clare Sweeney, Finty Williams, Dave Willetts, Richard Wilson and a choir from the Royal Academy of Music.
