Lesser & Horovitch Lead Lucky Hampstead Premiere

Lesser & Horovitch Lead Lucky Hampstead Premiere

Date: 22 April 2002

Anton Lesser and David Horovitch star in the world premiere of The Lucky Ones, an epic piece about successive generations of two exiled families, written by first-time playwright Charlotte Eilenberg. The play opens tonight, 22 April 2002, at London's Hampstead Theatre, following previews from 18 April. It is currently booking up to 18 May.

It's 1968. Leo and Bruno are German Jewish refugees in London with a property to sell and an enthusiastic buyer. But when the identity of the purchaser becomes clear, Leon lays down an extraordinary condition of sale. It's a deal that, some 30 years later, is to have dramatic consequences for the next generation.

Lesser's stage credits include numerous productions for the National Theatre (including Private Lives, Mutabilitie, Wild Oats and The Birthday Party), the RSC (Richard III, Troilus and Cressida, The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Taming of the Shrew) and in the West End (Art). Horovitch's recent stage appearances include Copenhagen (National tour), Spinning into Butter (Royal Court) and, at Hampstead, Disposing of the Body.

Lesser and Horovitch are joined in the cast of The Lucky Ones by James Clyde, Miranda Foster, Kelly Hunter, Margot Leicester and Michelle Newell. The production is directed by Matthew Lloyd.

Though The Lucky Ones is the first play she's written, Eilenberg is no stranger to theatre. She's worked for many years as an arts publicist, not least for the Hampstead itself. When she wrote the play, she sent it out under a pseudonym to several other theatres until the Hampstead caught wind of it and asked to see the script.
