Rivers & Benn Bring Solo Shows to West End in April

Two rather different personalities will bring their solo shows to the West End next month for a clutch of performances - with politician Tony Benn at the Old Vic and comedian Joan Rivers at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Benn stood down at the last General Election after 50 years in Parliament as a Labour MP and formerly Cabinet minister. In An Audience with Tony Benn, which has been touring regionally, he talks about his life, diaries and the future, with time left for questions at the end of his oratory.

An Audience with Tony Benn will play for one showing only on Sunday 21 April at the Old Vic, where Athol Fugard's award-winning South African apartheid The Island finishes its run on 13 April 2002.

American comedian and television presenter Joan Rivers (pictured) is now as well known for her facelifts as for her lacerating put-downs. Her current show was first seen at the 2001 Edinburgh Festival where it won rave reviews. Now subtitled "Broke 'n' Alone in London", it will run for three consecutive Sundays - 14, 21 and 28 April - with a 6.00pm and 8.30pm showing on each date.

During the rest of the week, Peter Hall's production of Lady Windermere's Fan, starring mother and daughter Vanessa Redgrave and Joely Richardson, continues to run at the Haymarket until 8 June.
