Spiro & Britton Join Briers & Whitfield in Bedroom
Date: 27 February 2002

Samantha Spiro (pictured) and Jasper Britton will join stage and television veterans June Whitfield and Richard Briers in the upcoming revival of Alan Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce. The comedy opens at the West End's Aldwych Theatre on 8 April 2002 (previews from 5 April), following regional dates in March at Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and Richmond Theatre.

Premiered in Scarborough in 1975, Bedroom Farce opened at the National Theatre in 1977 and subsequently transferred to the West End where it ran until September 1979. Since then, it has remained a popular touring production around the UK. The comedy concerns three married couples who are at different stages in their relationships and whose lives intersect over the course of one very chaotic evening.

Spiro was last on the London stage in the Donmar Warehouse production of Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along, which won her both the Olivier and the Whatsonstage.com 2001 awards for Best Actress in a Musical. Her many other stage credits include As You Like It, Glyn and It, How the Other Half Loves, On the Piste, Teechers and Cleo, Camping, Emmanuelle and Dick.

Britton was nominated for this year's Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Actor for his role in Simon Gray's Japes at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. His other recent stage appearances include the title role in Macbeth, Two Noble Kinsmen and The Tempest at Shakespeare's Globe; Honk! The Ugly Duckling, Troilus and Cressida and Summerfolk at the National; and The Beggar's Opera, Tamburlaine and Anthony and Cleopatra for the RSC.

Also in the cast are Jason Watkins (star of the RSC's oft-returned A Servant to Two Masters), Nigel Lindsay (currently in Push Up at the Royal Court and previously seen in The Real Thing in London and on Broadway), Rose Keegan (Hushabye Mountain and TV's Hearts and Bones) and Suzy Aitchison (Acykbourn's House and Garden at the National).

Bedroom Farce is directed by Loveday Ingram, an associate director at the Chichester Festival Theatre, whose production of Gershwin musical My One and Only has just opened at the West End's Piccadilly Theatre. The Ayckbourn comedy is designed by Lez Brotherston with lighting by Paul Pyant. It is produced by Michael Codron and Lee Dean.
