Variety Rewards My Fair Lady & Private Lives StarsDate: 14 February 2002While the National revival of My Fair Lady lost out to the Broadway transfer of Kiss Me Kate for honours at this year's Evening Standard, Critics' Circle and Whatsonstage.com Awards, the Variety Club proved this week that it's certainly not "three strikes, you're out" for the musical. At Variety’s 50th annual Showbusiness Awards, My Fair Lady scooped the Musical Theatre Award and members of the current cast performed live, along with pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor. In the two other theatre-related categories, Lindsay Duncan and Alan Rickman - currently co-starring in Howard Davies' revival of Private Lives at the Albery Theatre and about to transfer to Broadway - won awards for best Stage Actress and Stage Actor respectively. The Showbusiness Awards - which all cover film, radio, television and popular music - were televised last night on BBC One. The ceremony, held on Tuesday at the London Hilton, was attended by a variety of celebrities including Russ Abbot, Paul Daniels, Ewan McGregor, Cameron Mackintosh, Jonathan Pryce, David Suchet and Eric Sykes. - by Terri Paddock Related Content |
