Osmond Fronts Sing-a-long Joseph Launch, 13 Feb

Following on from the cult success of the Sing-a-long Sound of Music comes the latest karaoke blend of film and theatre - the Sing-a-long Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which is launched by Donny Osmond (pictured) tomorrow night, Wednesday 13 February 2002, at the Prince Charles Cinema in London's Leicester Square.

Produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Films with Singalong Productions, the screen version of the ever-popular stage musical is directed by David Mallett and Steven Pimlott, blending both film and theatre techniques in the telling of the Biblical story about Joseph, left for dead by his jealous brothers in ancient Egypt and saved by the remarkable powers of his colourful garb.

The cast of the film version is led by 1970s pop superstar Donny Osmond, who played Joseph for five years in the North American production of the stage show. He's joined by an all-star British cast which includes Maria Friedman, Joan Collins, Alex Jennings, Richard Attenborough, Christopher Biggins and Ian McNeice.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was the first-ever collaboration between Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice. It started life in 1968 as a 20-minute entertainment for an end-of-term school concert. The musical went on to huge success in the West End and on Broadway and on tours throughout the world. In the early 1990s, a West End revival ran for more than two years at the London Palladium, taking over £47 million at the box office, being seen by over two million people, and bringing huge stage success for its Josephs - Philip Schofield and Jason Donovan. A major new touring production, presented by Bill Kenwright, launched last spring and continues its UK-wide schedule.

The Sing-a-long Joseph, like its Sound of Music predecessor, will include a nightly fancy dress competition and free Magic Moment goody bags with additional props to wear, wave and use to reflect the lyrics of the songs. Following the launch, it will join the Prince Charles cinema's regular repertoire and, all going to plan, will embark on a national and worldwide tour later this year.
