Cardiff Launches Global Search for New Musicals

Cardiff Launches Global Search for New Musicals

Date: 7 December 2001

Entries are now being accepted for new musicals to be included as part of the programme in next year’s inaugural International Festival of Musical Theatre, which will be held in Cardiff from 14 October to 3 November 2002.

"The Global Search for New Musicals" is designed to bring the best new musicals from around the world to the attention of producers, directors and the general public, via the Cardiff event. Organisers say that the Search is the only worldwide forum for new musicals. They are now inviting composers and librettists at all levels - from established professionals to first-time writers - to submit their work for consideration.

After a selection process overseen by Search artistic director Julian Woolford, chosen musicals will be given showcase performances at the 2002 Festival. Each showcase will last 45 minutes and will be presented twice during a three-day programme from 30 October to 2 November 2002. The showcases will form a climax to the Festival, which will also include full-scale musical productions, concerts, exhibitions, masterclasses, cabarets and a theatre producers’ conference.

Commenting on the Global Search, Woolford said: "This is a major opportunity for anyone interested in getting their musical produced. The Search is going all-out to find the very best new musicals from across the world. We have already had many indications from international producers that they will come to Cardiff to see these showcases. This is about finding tomorrow's classics, today."

The closing date for submissions is 14 January 2002, with the showcase programme announced in June 2002. For an entry pack, log onto www.cardiffmusicals.com.
