All-New Superstar Tours UK from 21 August
Date: 8 July 1998
An all new production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's biblical musical Jesus Christ Superstar embarks on a national tour next month. The production reunites director Gale Edwards with designer Peter J Davison in a completely re-directed, re-designed show. The tour launches 21 August in Newcastle and is currently booked through to 6 February 1999 in Belfast.
Other tour stops include Southend, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Leeds and Oxford with further runs beyond February due to be announced later in the year.
Jesus Christ Superstar first appeared on Broadway in 1971 and went on to open the following year at the West End's Palace Theatre where it ran for 3,358 performances. Another West End production was mounted at the refurbished Lyceum Theatre in November 1996; it closed at the end of March this year.
Based on the New Testament, the play follows the final days of Jesus Christ, from his ruffling of the Pharisees to his betrayal by Judas and his crucifixion. Songs from the musical include 'I Don't Know How to Love Him', 'What's The Buzz?' and 'Heaven on Their Minds' as well as the title song.
Australian Edwards and Davison have worked on a number of shows together, including, most recently, Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind which has just opened at the Aldwych Theatre. Edwards' other theatre credits include Lloyd Webber's Aspects of Love, the West End production of Jesus Christ Superstar and the RSC's Taming of the Shrew. Davison's many productions include several for the English National Opera and the Almeida Theatre.
They are joined by an ensemble cast as well as choreographer Anthony Van Laast, who worked with Lloyd Webber on Song and Dance and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Costumes are by Roger Kirk and lighting by Mark McCullough. Jesus Christ Superstar is produced by The Really Useful Theatre Company.
